Ingredients

For the Mozzarella Sticks:

  • 400g mozzarella cheese, cut into ½-inch thick slices
  • 180g breadcrumbs (regular or panko for extra crunch)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

For the Wet Batter:

  • 2 large eggs, whisked

For Frying:

  • Oil for deep frying

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Mozzarella

Start by cutting the mozzarella into uniform ½-inch thick slices. Set them aside while you prepare the coating stations.

Step 2: Make the Dry Coating Mixture

In a shallow bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, black pepper, and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the seasonings.

Step 3: Prepare the Wet Batter

In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs until fully combined. This will serve as the binding agent for the breadcrumb coating.

Step 4: Coat the Mozzarella Sticks

  1. Dip each mozzarella slice into the whisked eggs, ensuring it is fully coated.
  2. Transfer the cheese slice into the seasoned breadcrumb mixture, pressing firmly to help the coating adhere.
  3. Repeat the process by dipping the breaded mozzarella back into the egg mixture.
  4. Finally, coat it again in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing down firmly to create a thick, even layer that will hold up during frying.

Step 5: Freeze the Coated Mozzarella Sticks

Place the coated mozzarella sticks on a tray and freeze for at least 15 minutes. This step is crucial, as it helps prevent the cheese from melting too quickly while frying.

Step 6: Fry to Perfection

  1. In a deep frying pan, heat oil over medium heat until it reaches around 175°C (350°F).
  2. Carefully place the frozen mozzarella sticks into the hot oil, frying in small batches to avoid overcrowding.
  3. Fry for about 3 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  4. Remove from oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

Serve the mozzarella sticks hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as BBQ, ranch, or garlic aioli.

Making these mozzarella sticks at home is easier than you think, and the results are truly irresistible. Once you’ve tried them, you’ll never go back to frozen store-bought versions again!
