What Is Rooh Afza?
Rooh Afza is a popular rose-flavoured syrup that originated in South Asia and is widely used to make refreshing drinks and desserts. It has a bright red colour and a distinctive sweet rose taste, and it’s usually mixed with cold water, milk, or lemonade to create a cooling drink. Growing up, I’d have it with milk at Iftar (the time at which muslims break their fast!)
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon ceremonial or high-quality matcha powder, I used Yamasan Kyoto Ceremonial Grade Matcha!
- 60 ml hot water (not boiling)
- 2 tablespoons Rooh Afza syrup
- 180 ml milk (dairy or plant-based)
- Ice cubes, I used mini ice cube trays from amazon!
How to Make Rooh Afza Matcha
1. Prepare the matcha
Add the matcha powder to a small bowl and pour in the hot water. Whisk using a matcha whisk or small whisk until smooth and slightly frothy.
1. Prepare the glass
Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
2. Add the rose syrup
Pour 2 tablespoons of Rooh Afza over the ice.
3. Add the milk
Pour milk into the glass until it is about three quarters full.
5. Finish the drink
Slowly pour the frothed matcha over the milk so it sits on top and creates a layered effect.
6. Stir before drinking
Stir the drink gently so the matcha, milk and rose syrup combine.
Top Tips for the Best Rooh Afza Matcha
- Use good quality matcha powder for a smoother flavour
- Use the right water temperature for matcha (around 70°C / 160°F). Boiling water can burn matcha and make it bitter.
- Whisk in a zigzag motion, this technique breaks up clumps and introduces air, helping create that signature matcha froth on top.
- Adjust the Rooh Afza depending on how sweet you like your drink
